Slack is where work happens. It’s a messaging app used for internal communication at Empowered Education. You will receive an invitation email to join Slack and you’ll be added to the channels for your team. In the meantime, let’s go over some of the basics!
Channels
Your Slack workspace is comprised of channels. You’ll use channels to hold most of your conversations with other team members. They can be organized around anything — departments, projects, or any specific topic. Some of the channels we currently have are – #general, #random, #jobpostings, #claritycoaches, #welcomecoaches, etc.
Channels are for conversations that are open to all team members. Messages posted to channels are archived and searchable to the entire team.
Private channels are best used for topics that are sensitive or confidential, or limited to a small group of team members. A private channel and its contents are visible and searchable only to the channel members only. When creating a new channel, you can chose to make a Channel public or private.
You can search for all the channels by clicking on “Channels” on the left sidebar and join the relevant ones. You can also invite other team members to join a Channel by clicking Channel Settings icon at the top of Channel and Select Invite team members to join.

Messages
Direct messages and group messages (DMs and group DMs) are useful for quick, private conversations between two or more team members. These conversations are visible and searchable only to you and the team members you DM. You can DM just one person, or start a group message with up to 8 other people.
To send a Direct Message, click on Direct Messages on the left sidebar and look for the person you want to message and click Go.

Search
You’ll notice a search box in the upper-right corner of Slack — it’s there any time you need it. Simply type a word or phrase in the search box to start looking. You can even use a number of modifiers to help you narrow your results. More information on Searching in Slack
Notifications
Notifications are Slack’s way of telling you about items that need your attention. You can choose to receive notifications on your desktop, your mobile device, or by email. Notifications can even be customized by channel, so you can prioritize where your attention goes.
